William Hobbayne Community Gardens - Spring is nearly here

Anne Little

On a recent visit to the Community Gardens, it was wonderful to see the allotments being well maintained and prepared for Spring cultivation.

There have been some very interesting additions with many plot holders volunteering their spare time to carry out some innovative improvement projects. A huge amount of hard work went into fencing off the pond.

In April we should see the introduction of Hedgehogs to the allotments. Hedgehogs can swim but they can’t climb sheer surfaces, so a plot holder also created a hedgehog escape ladder.

Other plot holders spent time digging over an area by the compost heap to create a shared pumpkin and potato patch for everyone to enjoy. Planting will hopefully take place in the next few weeks...watch this patch!

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped with these two projects, it was great to see the Community Gardens Plot holders come together to enhance the allotment experience for everyone.

The Children’s plots are taking shape, and we can see the first shoots of their endeavours, with the Blueberry plants beginning to fruit.

Anna the new Community Gardens Committee Chair is very hands on and got stuck in pruning the dead branch on one of the apple trees. This work should hopefully help the tree flourish and produce some tasty apples.

There is a very long waiting list for an allotment but if you would like to add your name to the list, please look at our website and fill out an application form.
